To install a printer driver in Windows 11, first connect the printer and check whether Windows can set it up automatically. If it cannot, install a compatible driver package for your exact printer model and Windows system type. The steps below cover USB and network printers without assuming every model uses the same installer.
Before you start
- Find the exact printer model on the label or front panel.
- Turn the printer on and connect it by USB or to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
- For a downloaded driver, check that the model, Windows version, and system architecture match. Do not install a driver for a similar-looking model.
- If you have an older printer, read our guide to using older printers with modern operating systems.
Method 1: Add the printer in Windows 11
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and wait for Windows to search.
- If your printer appears, select Add device and follow any on-screen instructions.
- When setup finishes, open the printer entry and print a test page if that option is available.
Windows may install a built-in or Windows Update driver. Available features can differ from the manufacturer’s full software package.
Method 2: Install a downloaded driver package
- Open the printer’s model-specific driver page on our site and choose the package that explicitly matches your operating system.
- Download the installer and open the downloaded file from your Downloads folder.
- Follow the installer prompts. Connect the USB cable only when requested if the setup program instructs you to wait.
- For a Wi-Fi printer, confirm that the printer and computer are connected to the intended network.
- Return to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners and verify that the printer is listed.
For example, see the available packages on our HP LaserJet P1006 driver page. Always verify the compatibility notes shown for the specific file before installing it.
How to check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Open Settings → System → About.
- Find System type under Device specifications.
- Select a driver architecture only when the package offers that option and the package’s compatibility information matches your system.
Most current Windows 11 PCs use 64-bit Windows, but check the setting rather than relying on assumption. ARM-based devices may need a compatible ARM driver or a Windows-supported print path; a standard x64 installer is not automatically suitable.
If Windows cannot find the printer
- Check that the printer is powered on and ready.
- For USB, reconnect the cable and try another USB port. Avoid using a hub while troubleshooting.
- For Wi-Fi, confirm both devices are on the intended network and that the printer is not showing a connection error.
- Restart the printer and computer, then try Add device again.
- If installation fails, follow our guide to fixing printer driver installation errors.
Frequently asked questions
Does Windows 11 always need a separate printer driver?
No. Windows may install a compatible built-in driver automatically. A manufacturer’s package may be needed for additional features or when automatic setup does not work.
Should I uninstall the old driver first?
Not always. If the printer already works, avoid removing its driver unnecessarily. If installation repeatedly fails or the wrong model driver was installed, remove the incorrect printer/software through Windows settings and restart before trying the correct package.
Can I use a Windows 10 driver in Windows 11?
Do not assume compatibility from the version name alone. Check the printer manufacturer’s compatibility information and the package’s supported systems. Older packages may install, fail, or provide limited functions.
