How to install the Canon PIXMA iP4870 driver
Canon’s own steps for the full driver package:
- Click the link, select [ Save ], specify "Save As", then click [ Save ] to download the file.
- The downloaded file will be saved in the specified place in the self-extracting form ( .exe format ).
- Double-click the downloaded EXE file to decompress it, then installation will start automatically.
- On the Start menu, click Control Panel, and then, under Programs click Uninstall a Program.
- A page will open with a list of installed programs. Double click on the program that you want to uninstall.

Canon PIXMA iP4870 driver troubleshooting
Windows does not detect the printer during setup
Turn the printer on and plug the USB cable straight into the PC, not a hub. Then run the installer again. Pick the file that matches your Windows, 32-bit or x64.
The installer stops or fails partway through
Close other programs, restart the PC, and run the installer again. A wrong file often causes the failure. Check that the file lists your Windows version and bitness, or your exact macOS version.
I cannot find a scanner driver after installing
These files install the printer driver only. The list shows no scanner software for the iP4800 series. If the printer does not appear on macOS, check that your OS version matches the driver you picked.

Which Windows file should I pick?
Pick Ver. 2.56 for most setups. It covers Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista and XP, in 32-bit and x64. The XPS Ver. 5.56 driver skips XP and adds 16-bpc printing for smoother gradation.
Which macOS versions do the drivers cover?
Ver. 16.10.0.0 covers macOS 10.12 and OS X 10.11, 10.10, 10.9, 10.8 and 10.7. Ver. 11.7.1.0 covers 10.5 and 10.6. Ver. 7.30.1 covers 10.4 and 10.5.
Is there a driver for Windows XP x64?
Yes. Canon lists a separate Ver. 2.56 file for Windows XP x64, dated 12 Oct 2012. It is 9.35 MB. The main Ver. 2.56 file covers 32-bit XP only.
What is the security patch in the Mac driver?
Canon's Ver. 11.7.1.0 notes say the security of the software has been enhanced. That driver is for Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, dated 05 Sep 2017. Canon gives no further detail.
