Print Spooler keeps stopping is a frustrating problem. “I start Print Spooler, hit print, and it stops again.” If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. When the service stops repeatedly, a damaged queue file, an incompatible driver, or printer software may be crashing it. Starting the service over and over will not remove the trigger.
Print Spooler keeps stopping: quick checks
- Make sure the printer is powered on and has no paper jam, open cover, ink, toner, or cartridge warning.
- Check whether the problem affects printing, scanning, USB, Wi-Fi, or all of them.
- Use the full model name, including letters at the end. Similar model numbers do not guarantee the same driver.

Print Spooler keeps stopping fixes to try in order
- 1. Disconnect the affected printer temporarily and close printing applications.
- 2. Clear the queue using Microsoft’s stop, clear and start sequence.
- 3. Reconnect one printer and print a Windows test page. This helps identify whether one device triggers the crash.
- 4. Update or reinstall only the driver for the printer that causes the service to stop.
- 5. On an office or shared PC, do not remove every driver package. Other users or devices may depend on them.
What not to do
Do not download a mystery “driver updater,” install a package for a similar model, or delete every printer driver from an office computer. Those shortcuts can turn one broken queue into several. If a step needs administrator access, make sure you understand what it changes first.
How to tell where the problem is
- A Windows test page works: the driver and connection are probably usable; check the original app or document.
- The printer web page opens but printing fails: focus on the Windows queue, port, and driver.
- Nothing can reach the printer: solve the cable or network connection before reinstalling software.
- Only scanning fails: check the scanner driver and scanning utility separately from the print driver.

Still stuck?
If Print Spooler keeps stopping is still happening, write down the exact message, Windows version, connection type, and what changed just before the problem started. “Driver is unavailable after Windows Update on USB” is far more useful than “printer broken.” You can also review our Windows 11 printer driver installation guide and printer driver installation error guide.
