printer driver unavailable is a frustrating problem. “The printer is there, but Windows just says driver is unavailable.” If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. This usually means Windows can see a printer entry but cannot load a usable driver for it. It often appears after an update, after moving to a new PC, or when an older printer package does not match the computer.
printer driver unavailable: quick checks
- Make sure the printer is powered on and has no paper jam, open cover, ink, toner, or cartridge warning.
- Check whether the problem affects printing, scanning, USB, Wi-Fi, or all of them.
- Use the full model name, including letters at the end. Similar model numbers do not guarantee the same driver.
printer driver unavailable fixes to try in order
- 1. Open Settings → System → About and note whether the PC is x64 or ARM-based.
- 2. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners. Remove only the broken or duplicate entry, then restart the PC.
- 3. Run Windows Update, including relevant optional driver updates, and try Add device again.
- 4. If Windows does not find a suitable driver, use the exact model page from the manufacturer. Do not substitute a driver just because the model number looks close.
- 5. On an ARM PC, try Windows’ Add device workflow before forcing a traditional x64 installer.
What not to do
Do not download a mystery “driver updater,” install a package for a similar model, or delete every printer driver from an office computer. Those shortcuts can turn one broken queue into several. If a step needs administrator access, make sure you understand what it changes first.
How to tell where the problem is
- A Windows test page works: the driver and connection are probably usable; check the original app or document.
- The printer web page opens but printing fails: focus on the Windows queue, port, and driver.
- Nothing can reach the printer: solve the cable or network connection before reinstalling software.
- Only scanning fails: check the scanner driver and scanning utility separately from the print driver.

Still stuck?
If printer driver unavailable is still happening, write down the exact message, Windows version, connection type, and what changed just before the problem started. “Driver is unavailable after Windows Update on USB” is far more useful than “printer broken.” You can also review our Windows 11 printer driver installation guide and printer driver installation error guide.
