Brother Deep Sleep is a frustrating problem. “It prints after I power-cycle it, then disappears again when it goes to sleep.” If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. Forum reports often describe a printer that is visible after restart but stops responding later. That can resemble a driver failure even when the real problem is network discovery, power settings, or an old generic Windows queue.
Brother Deep Sleep: quick checks
- Make sure the printer is powered on and has no paper jam, open cover, ink, toner, or cartridge warning.
- Check whether the problem affects printing, scanning, USB, Wi-Fi, or all of them.
- Use the full model name, including letters at the end. Similar model numbers do not guarantee the same driver.
Brother Deep Sleep fixes to try in order
- 1. Before changing hidden settings, update the printer firmware and install the correct Brother package for the exact model.
- 2. When the printer is asleep, test whether its web page still opens at its IP address. If it does, the printer is reachable and the Windows queue may be the weak point.
- 3. Replace a generic or WSD queue with the manufacturer driver and a stable TCP/IP address when appropriate.
- 4. Check the normal Ecology or power settings documented for your model. Menu names and available options vary.
- 5. Avoid copying a hidden-button sequence from a different model. Use the model manual or Brother support instructions before changing service-style settings.
What not to do
Do not download a mystery “driver updater,” install a package for a similar model, or delete every printer driver from an office computer. Those shortcuts can turn one broken queue into several. If a step needs administrator access, make sure you understand what it changes first.
How to tell where the problem is
- A Windows test page works: the driver and connection are probably usable; check the original app or document.
- The printer web page opens but printing fails: focus on the Windows queue, port, and driver.
- Nothing can reach the printer: solve the cable or network connection before reinstalling software.
- Only scanning fails: check the scanner driver and scanning utility separately from the print driver.

Still stuck?
If Brother Deep Sleep is still happening, write down the exact message, Windows version, connection type, and what changed just before the problem started. “Driver is unavailable after Windows Update on USB” is far more useful than “printer broken.” You can also review our Windows 11 printer driver installation guide and printer driver installation error guide.
